When we asked Len Moisan why he started the Moisan Family Educational Opportunities fund in 2003, he shared this story:
My life began in the inner city of the south side of Chicago, a mile from White Sox Park in a mainly Irish and Italian working-class neighborhood called Canaryville. I learned a lot of things on the streets as a child and not all of them were good, particularly after my mother died when I was 8 years old.
Needless to say, there was plenty of trouble to get into, and I guided myself into much of it. But I also know that my life would have been much different if I had people like the ones I met at The Cabbage Patch, to guide and mentor me. The first time I met Mr. Roosevelt Chin, Tracy Holladay, Jennifer Scott, and Rod Napier, I was hooked. They were good people and great role models. My wife Gigi and I knew we needed to help.
I wanted as many children as possible to have the amazing benefits The Patch had to offer. Also, I was impressed that a young girl, Ms. Louise Marshall, started The Patch with her Sunday School Class. No doubt, she was anointed, and more than 100 years later, God is still using The Patch to mentor and disciple His children through The Patch.
If I had a ministry like The Patch in my neighborhood, where I could come and learn more about Jesus, how to live, and how to be a man, I would not have gotten myself into nearly as much as I did, and that’s exactly why we established this fund. We wanted to help The Cabbage Patch effect change, build disciples, and with inner- city children… to help show children and their families to know there are better ways to live and to experience fullness in their lives. Our prayer is that God will continue to bless and prosper The Patch.
