Stories from The Patch

The Legacy of Muhammad Ali

After the passing of Muhammad Ali, one of Louisville’s most famous icons, children at The Patch learned about and reflected on the local hero’s life. Those children who have been to the Muhammad Ali Center as part of The Patch’s field trips and summer camps had drawn inspiration from Ali’s six core principles…

Improving Community Across Generations

Can a game of corn hole and some ice cream bring generations together? It’s definitely a great way to start, as we saw during Young Leaders Day Camp! Our Young Leaders made a trip to Christian Care Communities to volunteer with their ice cream social event. Christian Care Communities is a senior living community that strives to provide a vibrant quality of life for older adults.

The Lessons of Spring Break

On a windy day in Missouri, 16 year old Cara* was lagging behind her fellow Cabbage Patchers during the Spring Break biking and camping trip. Biking isn’t her favorite way to spend the day, but it’s a big part of the Leadership Development Club, and Cara is always a team player. Most of the young people served by The Cabbage Patch live in urban neighborhoods, and the outdoor experiences that they have with The Patch truly broaden their horizons. For the past five years, Tim Horton Camp Kentahten has generously provided a camp weekend for approximately 50 children of The Patch that includes a ropes adventure course, arts and crafts, archery and more – all at a state of the art facility.

When Will We See You Again?

The Cabbage Patch Board of Directors is a diverse group, and each Board member brings a very unique set of talents and connections to our mission. We value their guidance in financial matters, strategic planning, marketing plans and more, and ask any Cabbage Patch Board member why they serve and the answer will be the same: it’s all about the children! We organized a fun night of program volunteering for the Board so they could connect with the children of The Patch, and after the activities in visual arts, performing arts, athletics and education, there was one interaction that was particularly moving. A Board member was saying goodbye after helping a young girl with an art project and when asked “When will we see you again?”

What’s in a Game?

What’s in a game? Most would say fun and entertainment, but at The Cabbage Patch, we look a little deeper and find opportunities to engage children in important lessons. The trick of educating children while they think they are playing is what makes our Educational Opportunities department so successful.
