Youth Empowering Youth: Cabbage Patch Teens Receive Louisville Youth Philanthropy Council Grant

Grants are a huge source of support for The Cabbage Patch, helping to fund things like building renovations, purchasing new equipment or launching new initiatives to serve children and families. They also serve as a testament to the health of our organization and the life-changing impact of our work — the organization giving the grant recognizes that we are doing good work and wants to help us do more.

That’s why we are thrilled to share The Cabbage Patch has been awarded an Educational Resources for Adolescents grant of $3,500 from the Louisville Youth Philanthropy Council (LYPC). LYPC is a local organization that connects young people with local nonprofits and community organizations to facilitate a greater understanding of the challenges they face and their needs. The program teaches young people that they have the ability to use philanthropy to have a positive impact on their community. That is the best part! LYPC is a group of young people who chose us because of the work we’re doing with young people!

“On behalf of everyone at The Cabbage Patch, we want to express our deep gratitude for selecting us as one of this year’s grant recipients,” said Recreation Assistant Manager and Outreach Coordinator Kolby Atkinson. “It is truly an honor to be recognized by such a passionate and dedicated group of young leaders who are committed to making a difference in the community.”

Kolby helped get this grant along the finish line, an effort that included touring the group from LYPC around The Cabbage Patch so they could see it firsthand. Kolby and a group from The Cabbage Patch attended the LYPC Annual Celebration Event on Tuesday, March 25, at Speed Art Museum, where they accepted the grant on behalf of The Cabbage Patch.

The goal for the grant money is to enhance teen programming by creating an engaging and dynamic Teen Room. With a growing teen group at The Cabbage Patch, staff have been working hard to create programming and space designated for teenagers. The grant funding will be used for new furniture, decorations, and a PS5 gaming system to create a space that is both fun and functional.

The new Teen Room will help attract and retain teen members, encouraging them to participate in our programs, build relationships, and develop important life skills. By providing them with a space they can call their own, we reinforce their importance within our community while fostering a sense of ownership and pride in them.

The Cabbage Patch is fortunate to have support from so many donors, volunteers, community members and staff who help make this life-changing work possible. Grants like the one from LYPC help us go above and beyond to accomplish even more in our mission to empower children and families to reach their full potential.
