Hunting for the Fairy Queen’s Jewels
It’s always exciting when Chief Pencil (Linda Baker) and Chief Crayon (Mary Ellen Stottman) bring the magic of Baxter’s Corner to The Cabbage Patch! In 2015, this dynamic duo facilitated the creativity of our young members as they wrote their second book, The Catasterous Cruise. During Spring Break week this year, they worked with our budding artists on a variety of techniques during The Cabbage Patch Young Illustrators Camp!

The Lessons of Spring Break
On a windy day in Missouri, 16 year old Cara* was lagging behind her fellow Cabbage Patchers during the Spring Break biking and camping trip. Biking isn’t her favorite way to spend the day, but it’s a big part of the Leadership Development Club, and Cara is always a team player. The previous evening, she and the other girls returned to the campsite after a long day to find that their tent was broken. You might say that the trip was not all sunshine and smiles for Cara, but what did she learn?

A Camp Kentahten Adventure
Imagine how exciting a camp adventure would be for a child who rarely leaves the city! Most of the young people served by The Cabbage Patch live in urban neighborhoods, and the outdoor experiences that they have with The Patch truly broaden their horizons. For the past five years, Tim Horton Camp Kentahten has generously provided a camp weekend for approximately 50 children of The Patch that includes a ropes adventure course, arts and crafts, archery and more – all at a state of the art facility.

When Will We See You Again?
The Cabbage Patch Board of Directors is a diverse group, and each Board member brings a very unique set of talents and connections to our mission. We value their guidance in financial matters, strategic planning, marketing plans and more, and ask any Cabbage Patch Board member why they serve and the answer will be the same: it’s all about the children! We organized a fun night of program volunteering for the Board so they could connect with the children of The Patch, and after the activities in visual arts, performing arts, athletics and education, there was one interaction that was particularly moving. A Board member was saying goodbye after helping a young girl with an art project and when asked “When will we see you again?”

What’s in a Game?
What’s in a game? Most would say fun and entertainment, but at The Cabbage Patch, we look a little deeper and find opportunities to engage children in important lessons. The trick of educating children while they think they are playing is what makes our Educational Opportunities department so successful.

Let’s Make Reading Fun Again!
Children often get frustrated when they are challenged in difficult subjects, but at The Cabbage Patch, they know that perseverance and patience will be rewarded. The Patch’s reading program was created after it was identified that many of our elementary school members were behind in their reading skills by at least a grade level. Because these students struggled with reading, books were no fun. We wanted to put the excitement and adventure back into reading, and foster a sense of dedication and commitment when it comes to learning.

A Christmas Treat at The Patch
“T’was the night before Christmas and all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.” The familiar refrain never fails to capture the hearts and imaginations of people young and old at Christmas time. And so a young Cabbage Patch performing arts participant decided the share these words with his Patch family during a reading at the Christmas concert.

On the Road to Independence with Recycled Rides
In May 2015, The New York Times published a story about the importance of transportation for those working to improve the quality of life for their families. The article referenced a Harvard study that identified commuting time as the strongest factor in escaping poverty. According to Nathaniel Hendren, a Harvard economist, transportation is more of a contributing factor to social mobility than several other factors, including crime and elementary school test scores. At The Patch, we have seen how reliable transportation can change lives, and we were thrilled to partner with Oxmoor Auto Group, Progressive Insurance and the National Auto Body Council for the Recycled Rides program for the third year!

Making History at the 2015 Annual Auction
When the time came to develop a theme for the 2015 Annual Auction, we looked to the success stories of our alumni for inspiration. Many Cabbage Patch members have made history in their families by becoming the first to go to college, the first to earn a degree…the first to show future generations what is possible. Where can history go from there? The accomplishment of just one person may seem small, but the influence can be enormous! It may inspire the first female President or the first cure for a disease. We make history by driving the message “you can!” home, one child at a time.
